COLLINS

CARR P. COLLINS III, "Kit," was born 23 July 1943 in Austin, Texas.

RICHARD HOWELL COLLINS, "Dick," was born 1 June 1947 in Dallas, Texas. 

CHRISTY CALVERT COLLINS was born 10 April 1950 in Dallas, Texas;

CARR III, RICHARD, and CHRISTY are the children of

CARR P. COLLINS, JR., born in Dallas, Texas, on 9 February 1918. Carr married, on 24 December 1941, at Sacramento, California, Calvert Keoun (see Keoun) of Marshall, Texas. He was then a Lieutenant in the Air Force and stationed at Mather Field.

He graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1939 where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He attended Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration for one year before entering Pilot Training. While at Harvard, he was elected President of the Business Students Association. In 1954, he was awarded a C.L.U. degree from the American College of Life Underwriters.

Carr was a Major (ASN-O-384127) in the Air Force during World War II. On 15 August 1941, he graduated from Air Corps Flying School and was rated "Pilot." Carr was with the Training Command in the United States, and served overseas as Operations Officer of the 6th Emergency Rescue Squadron, 5th Air Force, in the Pacific Theatre of Operation. He was awarded the Air Medal, Purple Heart, and 8 Battle Stars for participation in Asiatic-Pacific campaigns.

His business interests have been primarily in investments and insurance where he is or has been President of the Southwest Bank and Trust Company, President of Investment Trust Company, President of Brison-Collins Oil Company, and was selected as an arbitrator on the New York Stock Exchange Panel of Arbitrators. He has devoted a great deal of time to civic enterprises, having served or serving as a Director of the Y.M.C.A. of Dallas, the Dallas Society for Crippled Children, the Texas Psychiatric Foundation, and as a member of the Dallas City Plan Commission and the Greater Dallas Planning Council.

Carr's wife, Calvert Keoun Collins, has achieved notable recognition as a civic and social leader. She was elected the first woman to serve on the City Council of Dallas. Calvert has always participated in the activities of her children, having been President of the P .T .A., Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, sponsor of the Junior Assembly and a Life Member of the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers. Her church work includes teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, and Guild Chairman. Calvert has been an active worker in the Community Chest, Red Cross, Cancer Crusade, and other worthy charities. She has also been a Director of the Dallas Legal Aid Society and the Junior League of Dallas.

JAMES MITCHELL COLLINS (brother of Carr, Jr., above) was born in Hallsville, Texas, on 29 April 1916. James married, on 16 September 1942, in Maplewood, New Jersey, Dorothy Coville Dann of Maplewood.

James graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1937, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Jim then attended Northwestern University where he received a Master's Degree in 1938. At Northwestern, he won the Bill's Sales Award for outstanding achievement in the field of merchandising. In 1938, he was awarded the C.L.U. degree from the American College of Life Underwriters. In 1942, he received his second Master's Degree from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. While at Harvard, he was elected President of the Business Students Association.

He served as a Captain (ASN515198) in the Corps of Engineers in World War II. His duty was in the European Theatre where he served in England prior to the invasion, and then with the Corps of Engineers in France and Belgium. He received the Medal of Metz from the French Government in addition to four Battle Stars for European Campaigns.

His business career has been outstanding, and he was elected to the Young Presidents' Organization for heading a million dollar concern before he was James's primary interest has been in the insurance field where he made an outstanding record in personal sales and went on to become President of Fidelity Union Life Insurance Company in 1955. In addition to this, he is President of Itasca Cotton Manufacturing Company, President of Western Industries, Inc., Consolidated Industries, Inc., and International Industries, Inc., to mention only a few of the companies in which he is actively engaged. His energies have been equally directed toward many civic and community projects. He has served as a Director of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce and the Community Chest of Dallas. He was President of the Southern Methodist University Alumni Association. He has always maintained a keen interest in good government and has continually taken an active part in political affairs. Jim's wife, Dorothy Colville Dann Collins, "Dee," was born on July 19, 1921, in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Wellesley College where she made an outstanding record and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Dee and Jim met while he was at Harvard and she at Wellesley. After the War, they moved to Dallas, Texas, and have resided in Dallas since that time.

Dee has been an outstanding civic and community worker. She has taken an active part in many educational projects, having served as Chairman of the "Teachers for Texas" project which received national recognition. She has been a volunteer at the Cerebral Palsy Treatment Center and served on the Board of the Dallas Council of Social Agencies. During 1958-59, Dee was elected President of the Junior League of Dallas and in this capacity supervised the 500 League volunteers working in Dallas social and welfare projects, and directed the many other worthy Junior League projects.

James and Dee have three children: Michael James, born July 30, 1944, in South Orange, New Jersey; Dorothy Colville, born 16 October 1946 in Dallas, Texas; and Nancy Miles, born 23 May 1950 in Dallas, Texas.

RUTH ELAINE COLLINS (sister of James and Carr Jr., above) was born on 10 March 1924 in Dallas, Texas. On 21 June 1947, at Dallas, Texas, Ruth married Charles Stanton Sharp of Dallas. Ruth attended Fairmont College in Washington, D. C., and Southern Methodist University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority.

She is active in the P .T .A. and interested in all school and church activities where the family is concerned.

Ruth is a Sunday School teacher of high school teenagers. She is a Director of the Junior League and active in the Dallas Woman's Club.

Ruth has given herself generously in many volunteer and civic projects. She has served as President of the Visiting Nurse Association, Division Chairman of the Community Chest, and has "adopted" many shut-ins for regular visits and remembrance cards.

Her husband, Charles Stanton Sharp, was born on 15 October 1915 in Dallas, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas, and received a Law Degree in 1915. He is a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. After World War II, he attended Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration where he received a Master's Degree in Business in 1947.

Charles served as a Lieutenant Commander (SNl84763) in the Navy during World War II with duty on the East Coast in the Motor Torpedo Boats and served on the Battleship West Virginia in the Pacific.

His business activities have been in investments, real estate, and insurance. Charles is Executive Vice President of the Fidelity Union Life Insurance Company, President of Mayflower Investment Company, President of Southern Industries, Inc., President of Texas Properties, Inc., as well as serving as a Director of Milestone Drilling Company and the American National Bank. Charles has been an outstanding civic leader. He served as Chairman of the 1957 Community Chest Campaign which was the most successful drive in the history of the Dallas Chest. He has served as a Director of the Metropolitan Y.M.C.A., Freeman Memorial Clinic for Children, and the Council of Social Agencies. He is on the Board of Stewards of the Highland Park Methodist Church.

Ruth and Charles have two children: Sally Elaine Sharp, born 12 March 1949 at Dallas, Texas; and Charles Stanton, Jr., born 21 August 1952 at Dallas, Texas.

CARR, JR., JAMES, and RUTH are the children of

CARR PRITCHETT COLLINS was born at Chester, Tyler County, Texas, on 12 May 1892. He married Ruth Woodall (see Woodall) on 21 November 1914, at Hallsville, Texas.

Carr, Sr., was educated at the Beaumont High School, Beaumont, Texas, and then attended Southwest State College at San Marcos. It was while at San Marcos that he met his future bride, Ruth Woodall. In 1952, he was awarded a Doctor of Law Degree from Baylor University. His generosity and interest in literature are shown in "The Carr P. Collins Award" which is given each year by the Texas Institute of Letters for the best book written by a Texas author.

He has made an outstanding success in business with his primary interest in investments and finance. He started in the insurance field as Secretary of the Industrial Accident Board of Texas and then went with the Texas Employers Insurance Association as Secretary of the Association. Later he organized his own fire and casualty insurance company. In 1929, he organized the Fidelity Union Life Insurance Company where he continues to serve as Chairman of the Board.

He is a Director of the First National Bank in Dallas, and the Texas. New Mexico Railway, as well as many other corporations.

He is Chairman of the Brinson-Collins Oil Company and Senior Partner in the Vent-A-Hood Company and the L-C Cafeteria of Houston. He has done considerable real estate and shopping center developing, including beautiful Plymouth Park in suburban Dallas.

His energies have been equally directed toward civic and church activities, where he has served as a Director of the Baptist Foundation of Texas, the Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention, and as a Trustee of Baylor University. He has also been active in the Community Chest of Dallas, the Cancer Crusade, and many other worthy causes.

His wife, Ruth Woodall Collins (see Woodall) is beautifully described by the words of Dr. W. R. White, President of Baylor University, when dedicating the Ruth Collins Hall at Baylor, where he said, "always in thinking of a great man, I think of the one behind the scene, in this case, a gracious and graceful mother." White went on to say that Ruth Collins Hall is named in tribute to "the wife and mother who reared a wonderful family of staunch Christians and has been an inspiring helpmate to a great man."

Ruth Woodall Collins has been active in many clubs and organizations including the Dallas Woman's Club, the Bankers' Wives, and served on the Board of Directors of the Y.W.C.A. and the Texas Baptist Children's Home.

HALLEY HOUSTON COLLINS, "Hal" (brother of Carr Pritchett Collins, above), was born 10 December 1893 at Chester, Texas. He married, first, on 6 December 1913, at Beaumont, Texas, Alice Harriett "Jack" Hall, who was born on 26 July 1897 at Beaumont, Texas, and died in Dallas on 9 August 1940. They were the parents of five children (see below). He married, second, Leatrice Bramblett, on 23 June 1941, in Fort Worth, Texas. Hal lived in Mineral Wells, Texas, where he was President of the Crazy Water Company for many years. He organized his own company, "The Hal Collins Company," and moved his company to Dallas in 1944.

The children of Halley H. and Alice Harriett Collins were :

(A) HALLEY H., JR., "Hal," was born 14 June 1918 in Houston, Texas. He married Pauline , McDermott in London, England, on 22 April 1944. Hal served as a Lieutenant with the Air Force (ASN C2044992) in Europe during World War II. Their children are: Stephen Clark, born 20 October 1945 in Dallas, Texas; and Angela Lynn, born 22 June 1949 in Dallas, Texas.

(B) MARY ANN, born 10 June 1917 in Houston, Texas. She married, first, on 3 August 1939, in Dallas, Texas, Otto T. Light. They had one daughter, Kay Elaine, who was born in Dallas, Texas, on 3 September 1941. Mary Ann married, second, Robert L. Clark in Dallas, Texas, on 29 June 1957.

(C) RUTH CLAIRE was born on 2 April 1920 in Taylor, Texas. She married George W. Graham of Wichita Falls, Texas, on 11 March 1939, in Dallas, Texas. They are the parents of: Harry L., born 13 December 1939 in Austin, Texas; Hal Collins, born I December 1943 in Wichita Falls, Texas; and Georgia Claire, born I August 1951 in Wichita Falls.

(D) LARRY DONALD, born on 31 July 1923 in Houston, Texas. He married Joan Marie Edwards on 9 April 1945 in San Antonio, Texas. Larry served as a Staff Sergeant aerial ::1 gunner with the 347th Squadron, 99th Heavy Bomber Group, 15th Air Force in Europe during World War II. Their children are: Ronald Kent, born 12 May 1946 in Dallas, Texas.; Kenneth Scott, born 19 July 194;7 in Dallas, Texas; Mark Edwards, born 13 August 1951 in Dallas, Texas; and Karen Elaine, born 13 September 1952 In Dallas, Texas.

(E) LOUELLA ALICE was born 13 January 1932 in Mineral Wells, Texas, and married in Dallas, Texas, on 28 December 1953, Jack Anderson. They have one son, Douglas Arthur, born 22 January 1955 in Austin, Texas; and a daughter, Susan Elaine, born 27 August 1958 in Dallas, Texas.

CARR SR., and HALLEY were the children of V. A. Collins and his first wife, Elizabeth Steadman Hopkins.

ALLENE COLLINS was born on 6 August 1904. She married, first, Oscar Coleman. Allene and Oscar had one child, Mary Nann, who was born on 16 July 1924 at Dallas, Texas. (1)

Allene married, second, J. O. Bergman of Livingston, Texas.

WARREN KUYKENDALL COLLINS, "Kirk," was born 3 March 1906. He served as County I Commissioner of Polk County, Texas. He has no children.

LILLIAN MAE COLLINS was born on 20 October 1908. She married, first, Harrison Jackson, and by him had two children: Allan, born 28 August 1935; and Carroll, born 15 April 1937. She married, second, C. L. Hacklers.

JACK DIES COLLINS was born 25 July 1910. He is in the oil business in Texas and Oklahoma. Jack married Emmogene Morris and they have one daughter, Jacqueline, who was born I February 1937.

ALLENE, KIRK, LILLIAN MAE and JACK are the children of V. A. and his second wife, Nannie Kuykendall Collins.

VINSON ALLEN COLLINS, "Uncle Yank," was born in Hardin County, Texas, on 1 March 1867. He got his nickname "Yank" because he was such a roly-poly, pink-faced boy in the midst of the poor South of post Civil War days, that folks said no one but a "Yankee" could be that fat and well fed.

V. A. was raised on a farm and by hard work and perseverance got himself an education and became a teacher. Later, he attended and graduated from Huntsville State Teachers College where he was awarded his teacher's certificate. He went back into teaching, but also continued his studies-this time in law. He was admitted to the State Bar of Texas and was in the active practice of law until he was almost 90. He still (1 July 1958) maintains his office and acts as advisor and counselor to his many friends and admirers in and around Livingston, Texas.

He has always been interested in civic affairs and served in the Texas Senate for many years and was a candidate for Governor of Texas in 1924. In 1935, he was appointed to the Board of Regents of the State Teachers Colleges of Texas and served through 1950.

V. A. Collins married, first, on 29 August 1889, at Moscow, Texas, Elizabeth Steadman Hopkins (see Hopkins), who was born on 26 August 1870 in Perry County, Alabama, and died on 13 April 1900 at Chester, Texas.5.14

He married, second, on 14 December 1902, Nannie Kuykendall who was the daughter of E. R. Kuykendall of Grand Saline, Texas. V. A. is the son of

WARREN JACOB COLLINS was born on 24 August 1839,(9) in Jones County, Mississippi, and died on 31 January 1926,(6) in Hardin County, Texas. Warren came to Texas about 1852. Later he went back and married Tabitha Eboline Valentine (see Valentine) on 19 December 1854 in Jones County, Mississippi. Eboline was born on 22 September 1836,(13)  in Mississippi and died 2 December 1921 in Hardin County, Texas.(6) They are both buried in the Holland Cemetery, just south of Village Mills, Texas.

Warren and Eboline returned to Texas immediately after the wedding and settled at the Old Poplar Tree place, which is now Honey Island, Texas. Warren brought his parents and some brothers back to Texas with him. He worked with the surveyors who measured the boundaries of Hardin County, and was the Daniel Boone of Eastern Texas.(7) 

Their children were:(8) Mary Jane, born 13 October 1855, died 10 July 1927, and married, first, a Parritt, and, second, John Gillchreas; Sarah Margaret, born 9 December 1856, died 9 October 1932, and married Dan Overstreet; Cynthia Eboline, born 7 June 1858, died 3 April 1949, and married J. F. Wiggins; Edwin Warren, born 13 March 1860, died 12 September 1946, and married Missouri Overstreet; Morgan Mathias, born 22 May 1862, died 15 June 1915, and married Clara Carlton; Filmore Clay, born II March 1865, died 2 February 1947, and married Eugenia Cot ten; Vinson Allen (see above), born I March 1867, and married, first, Elizabeth Hopkins, and, second, Nannie KuykendalI; Simeon H., born 18 August 1869, died 27 January 1888; Lillie Marcella, born 5 March 1872, and married, first, John Minzes, and, second, Tom Womble; Cora Algenora, born 22 May 1874 and married J. C. Simpson; and Frances Ada, born 1 September 1877 and married John Ransom.

Warren was the son of

STACY COLLINS was born on 18 October 1786(9) near Spartanburg, South Carolina. It is said that his father and uncles served with General Marion, "the Old Swamp Fox," during the Revolutionary War. We have no indication of the ancestry of Stacy Collins but know he had a sister Betsy Collins who married Bennett Blackman. Betsy and Bennett were listed in the 1820 and 1830 Census as living in Pearl River County, Mississippi.

Stacy married Sary (Sarah) Anderson about 1807 in Georgia. Sary was born 29. August 1792.(9) Stacy was Sarah's second husband. She married, first, a "Gibson" who was killed a month after their marriage by being thrown from a horse. Sarah's brother Jonathan (Asa or Anse) Anderson married Betsy Welch, the daughter of Bryant Welch and sister of Cynthia Welch who married Allen Valentine (see Welch and Valentine).

Stacy Collins was the first Assessor and Collector of Taxes of Jones County, Mississippi (see Register of Commission, Mississippi, 1818-24, Page 117).(10) He was appointed Captain, Company A, 23rd Regiment, Mississippi Militia, on 10 December 1845 (see Register of Militia Appointments, 1841-48, Page 151).(10)

The four oldest children of Stacy and Sarah were born in Georgia, while the others were born after they moved to Mississippi. The 1816 Census shows them living in Wayne County, Mississippi. Shortly thereafter, they moved to the Ellisville area on the "Old Ridge Road," Jones County, Mississippi, where they raised their family.(11)

About 1855, Stacy and Sarah came to Texas with their son Warren and some of their other children. Stacy died in Texas about 1858 and Sarah died a few years later in Texas.

The children of Stacy and Sarah Collins were.(9-12) Nancy, born 13 April 1809 and married John Riley; Sary (Sallie), born 17 November 1810 and married, first, George Walters, and, second, a Parker; Betsy, born 1 November 1812 and married Robert Thompson; Vinson A., born 16 January 1815 and married Nancy Bynum; Mary, born 12 June 1817 and married, first, Robert Walters, and, second, Henry Parker; Simeon, born 27 May 1819 and married Lidia Bynum; Peggy, born 21 February 1821 and married Ben Bynum; Stacy, born 29 August 1823 and married Allie Walters; Riley James, born 23 December 1825 and married Desdimonia Welch (see Welch) ; Jasper, born I November 1827 and married Gatsey Powell; Newton, born 27 May 1830 and married Eliza Williams; Warren Jacob (see above), born 24 August 1833, died 31 January 1926, and married Eboline Valentine; Christopher Calhoun, born 24 February 1835; and Edwin W., born 20 March 1840.
